Heath Hands CEO Steps Down After 11 Years

Colin Houston is stepping down as chief executive of Heath Hands after 11 and a half years, the last three of which he served as the charity's first chief executive. In a personal reflection, Houston highlighted the organisation's growth and its role in connecting people with nature on Hampstead Heath.

A Decade of Conservation and Community

Houston described his tenure as "an absolute honour and privilege," calling the role "a dream job." Under his leadership, Heath Hands expanded its practical conservation work, introduced new groups to the outdoors, and developed health and wellbeing sessions. He credited the charity's partners, the City of London and English Heritage, for their support in managing the green spaces.

"I think Heath Hands is a truly remarkable organisation, operating at that sweet spot of bringing people together to connect with nature in different ways," Houston wrote. He also expressed gratitude to the staff and volunteers, stating, "A massive final thank you goes to the staff and volunteers at Heath Hands, without whom I wouldn't be in the privileged position to be able to write all of this."

New Initiatives for Young People

As the autumn term begins, Heath Hands is launching a new Hampstead Heath Eco Club, enabling young people to participate in outdoor activities with like-minded nature enthusiasts. The project is supported by the Young Camden Foundation and the National Lottery Awards for All. Information is available at heath-hands.org.uk/youth.

The charity has also been selected for the Aviva Community Fund crowdfunder this autumn. Funds raised will expand school work experience programmes and equip local young people with tools and knowledge to address climate change. Houston encouraged support, saying, "I do hope you can help us start our next chapter and get the next generation of climate champions and Heath lovers involved."

Farewell and Future

Houston's departure marks a significant transition for Heath Hands, which he leaves with a legacy of growth and community engagement. The charity continues its work with school programmes and conservation efforts, supported by partners and volunteers.

As Houston bids farewell, he urged the public to engage with the charity's crowdfunder at heath-hands.org.uk, ensuring the next generation of environmental stewards can carry forward the mission on Hampstead Heath.
