The Met Office has warned that a sixth heatwave of the year could hit the UK next month, even as the country continues to grapple with drought and wildfires. In a long-range forecast issued on Sunday, the national weather service said temperatures could sizzle again despite the calendar turning to autumn.
Forecast for late August and September
The forecast, covering August 30 to September 13, states: 'There is a chance that late-season hot spells or heatwaves develop, especially in the south.' It also predicts 'drier, more settled weather is slightly more likely towards the south and east,' with temperatures mellowing to average.
Britons will get some respite this week as temperatures are expected to drop. The Met Office says of August 20 to August 29: 'The first few days of this period are likely to be rather changeable, with many parts of the UK seeing showers or perhaps some longer spells of rain.'
High pressure and above-average temperatures
High pressure, which brings descending air that clears clouds, is expected in the north and west, while low pressure in the south could bring rain. Low pressure systems from the Atlantic will bring wind and rain, but forecasters say temperatures will still be above average. However, the Met Office adds: 'Though the possibility of widespread or exceptional heat is perhaps a little lower than in recent weeks.'
The UK has experienced record-breaking temperatures this year, with the fifth heatwave bringing the hottest day of the year at 38.1°C. The government issued an emergency warning on Friday against using disposable barbecues to prevent wildfires.
Wildfires and drought continue
The West Midlands declared a major incident on Thursday due to wildfires that have consumed 500 acres and destroyed 19 homes. In South Wales, 14 wildfires are burning, with officials warning the threat will continue into next week. Experts told Metro that the UK is suffering a 'firewave,' with most wildfires caused by humans.
A 'heat dome'—a stubborn high-pressure system that prevents air from rising and forming clouds—has intensified the extreme heat across Europe. Additionally, experts told Metro last month that a 'super El Niño,' a turbocharged weather system blowing hot ocean air, could also be heating the UK.
While it is difficult to attribute this year's temperatures directly to human-caused climate change, scientists know that heatwaves are becoming more intense, more frequent, and longer. The ongoing drought and wildfire risk are expected to persist as the country braces for potentially more hot weather.
