The fourth heatwave of the year in London is set to peak today, Wednesday, July 29, with highs of around 33C or 34C, before a sharp drop of approximately 6C overnight signals the end of the hot spell.
Temperature forecast for London
According to forecasters, Thursday, July 30, will see temperatures return to the mid- to high-twenties, with a peak of 27C between 2pm and 7pm. Friday will round out July with a pleasant 25C. The heatwave, which has affected London and the rest of the UK, is the fourth of the year.
Health and wildfire warnings
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an amber heat-health alert covering the East Midlands, East of England, South East, and London, in place from Tuesday to Thursday. The agency warned that rising temperatures may increase health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups. The Met Office, in conjunction with Natural England, has produced a UK Fire Severity Index map showing London as a “very high” wildfire risk throughout the week up to Sunday, August 2. The severity is upgraded to “exceptionally high” in Headcorn, Kent, just south of Maidstone.
Fire chiefs said many wildfires are caused by everyday human activity, adding that “disposing of cigarettes safely, avoiding the use of disposable barbecues in open spaces and taking litter home can significantly reduce the risk of fires starting”. They urged people to report any signs of fire immediately by calling 999 and asking for the fire and rescue service.
Record-breaking July
Provisional Met Office data shows July has been 3C above average across the UK, potentially placing it among the hottest three or four Julys on record. Across the Channel, France, Spain, and Italy are battling wildfires.
