London could face flooding this autumn following the hottest summer on record, according to a weather expert. Jim Dale of the British Weather Services has warned that nature may undergo a 'course correction' after temperatures reached 38C in Kew Gardens earlier this week.
Natural balancing effect
Dale told MyLondon that one reason for the potential shift is a natural balancing effect. 'We are going through a period of very dry, intensely hot, record-breaking weather,' he said. 'There is a tendency for the weather to make up what it's been short of - this is a kind of natural pattern - a balancing effect. It's a bit like what happens in the tropics when you get a dry season then you get a very wet season.'
Dale also pointed to latent energy, the hidden heat energy absorbed or released when water changes its physical state. This stored energy acts as the primary fuel for driving clouds and thunderstorms. 'Molecules moving faster and the expansion of the air above means rain that arrives will be likely heavier and more intense,' he explained.
Prime Minister's warning
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has echoed similar concerns while visiting the scene of a fire in Stourbridge in the West Midlands, where residents were forced to evacuate. In a speech, Burnham warned that climate change has the nation 'in a chokehold'. He said: 'We might be in for a wet autumn and winter straight after this, because of El Nino and some of the issues there, which was reported to Cobra. So, after fire could come floods. We have to face up to the changing climate. I think we need a different debate about that. There's no point denying where we are. We need to face up to it.'
London weather outlook
For the next week, temperatures will be cooler than today's 33C but still hot. The Met Office forecast for London shows sunny intervals with highs ranging from 22C to 28C. Saturday, August 15, will see a high of 27C and a low of 16C, with similar conditions through Tuesday, August 18. Wednesday, August 19, will reach 25C, and by Thursday, August 20, highs will drop to 22C before rising slightly to 23C on Friday, August 21.
The warnings come as the UK experiences the effects of a changing climate, with record-breaking heat followed by potential heavy rainfall. Residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates and prepare for possible flooding in the coming months.
