With the solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, approaching, experts are warning that counterfeit or uncertified eclipse glasses can still allow harmful solar radiation to reach the retina, potentially causing permanent vision damage. The event, which will see over 90% of the Sun blocked by the Moon between 6.17pm and 8.06pm, is the most spectacular since the total eclipse of 1999, but safety-approved glasses have almost completely sold out online.
Only Certified Glasses Are Safe
Eye specialists stress that only solar eclipse glasses bearing ISO 12312-2 certification provide adequate protection. Standard sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe. They reduce glare and create a deceptive sense of comfort, but harmful solar radiation can still penetrate the retina unchecked. The Royal College of Ophthalmologists documented approximately 70 cases of visual impairment after the 1999 eclipse, with around 40% of those affected having looked at the Sun for less than a minute.
Mohamed Elalfy, consultant ophthalmologist and president of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, said: "The safest way to enjoy the eclipse is to observe it indirectly, such as by watching a live broadcast. Looking directly at the Sun during a solar eclipse can cause damage to the retina, potentially damaging the cells responsible for sharp central vision." He added that because the retina has no pain receptors, people won't feel damage as it happens, and symptoms may appear hours later, including blurred vision, central blind spots, distorted vision, reduced colour perception, and light sensitivity. While some recover, others may be left with permanent visual impairment.
Beware of Homemade Filters and DIY Methods
Kyla Black, director of optical practice at Boots Opticians, advised parents to be "particularly careful" when allowing children to view the eclipse. She warned against homemade filters: "It's a common myth that wearing multiple pairs of sunglasses can protect you from any harmful UV light – this is untrue and should be avoided at all costs as only purpose-built eclipse glasses can allow you to watch an eclipse." She also cautioned that DIY pinhole projectors made from cereal boxes can be dangerous if not made correctly, and that objects like smoked glass, colour film, floppy disks, X-ray film, and dark sunglasses do not block invisible infrared and ultraviolet rays.
For those using cameras, binoculars, or telescopes, approved solar filters are essential. If unsure whether a telescope has the correct filter, contact the manufacturer. The Royal Observatory Greenwich also warned that ordinary sunglasses are not adequate.
How to View Safely
Imo Bell, a planetarium astronomer at the observatory, said: "It's not a total eclipse, but over 90% is really exciting. We're not going to get one this good for a really long time. So, it's important not to miss it, and to be prepared. You can't just go out and expect to have a look, because it's really dangerous for your eyes." She recommended using solar eclipse glasses, which block out so much light that you can't see anything else, or a solar telescope. If neither is available, she suggested projecting the image using a colander: point it at the Sun with your back facing it, and you'll see the eclipse in the holes.
Perseid Meteor Shower Adds Extra Treat
As a bonus, the annual Perseid meteor shower peaks on the night of August 12-13. Earth passes through debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, with particles hitting the atmosphere at about 60 kilometres per second, creating fleeting shooting stars. This celestial double feature offers a rare opportunity for skywatchers, but safety must come first.
