This week's heatwave qualifies under the Met Office definition for London, which requires three consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 28C. From Wednesday, August 12, to Friday, August 14, London will experience a heatwave, though temperatures will remain hot even after that period.
Cooler Temperatures Ahead, But Heat Could Return
After the heatwave peaks, temperatures are set to return to the mid-20s, with highs ranging between 23C and 26C for the foreseeable future. The current BBC forecast extends only to Monday, August 24, leaving open the possibility that heatwaves could make a comeback.
The Met Office's long-range forecast suggests that high pressure will likely dominate near the UK, bringing periods of dry weather for many regions. However, it also notes: "Some more unsettled or changeable interludes are probable at times, bringing showers or some longer spells of rain, although overall rainfall amounts are more likely to be below average than above. Temperatures will likely be above average and some spells of hot weather and heatwaves are possible, especially in the south."
Potential for September Heatwaves
The Met Office's outlook extends into September, indicating that further heatwaves could occur, particularly in southern parts of the UK. This means Londoners might not have seen the last of extreme heat this summer, despite the forecasted respite next week.
