Mexican food is a firm favorite among Brits, but for those seeking an upscale experience, KOL in Marylebone, London, offers something truly unique. This high-end restaurant is the only Mexican establishment in the UK to hold a Michelin Star, driven by a philosophy of "Mexican soul, British ingredients." Led by Chef Patron Santiago Lastra, who previously managed the Noma Mexico pop-up, KOL uses traditional Mexican techniques but sources almost exclusively British seasonal produce.
Creative Substitutions and Tasting Menu
This approach leads to inventive substitutes, such as using sea buckthorn instead of lime for acidity. Dining is primarily through a multi-course tasting menu, with a choice of two sharing mains—often carnitas (confit pork cheek) or grilled octopus. The langoustine taco, served with smoked chilli and sea buckthorn, is widely considered the standout dish.
Viral Review by Hand Luggage Only
Instagram influencer 'Hand Luggage Only' shared their experience in a viral post, showcasing the restaurant's interior and dishes. They tried the 11-course tasting menu, priced at £145 per person. The meal began with a "comforting" chilpachole, a traditional thick seafood soup built on chipotle and layered chillies. Next was a "theatrical" beef short rib quesadilla wrapped around the bone, enriched with truffles, cep puree, plum salsa, and xnipec, where "richness met brightness in every bite."
A "beautifully balanced" ceviche of hand-dived scallop and Beluga caviar followed, lifted with horseradish, rhubarb, lovage, and sea lettuce, described as "sharp, clean, and quietly luxurious." Other courses included tacos filled with Isle of Skye langoustine, Wagyu huarache, and a mushroom pozole. Desserts featured a squash-based paleta in place of mango and crisp buñuelos served with Tunworth ice cream.
Bar and Antojitos
KOL also has a dedicated bar specializing in agave spirits, offering Mexican street food-inspired snacks known as antojitos. The post garnered over 5,000 likes, with one commenter exclaiming, "Oh my God, I'm going next week, I'm so excited!" Another added, "This looks so delicious!" A third person who had visited said it was "one of their favorites."
