The developers behind the acclaimed Silent Hill 2 remake are setting their sights on a new horror chapter for Nintendo, teasing an unannounced Switch exclusive that promises to deliver an experience impossible to replicate on other platforms.
While Cronos: The New Dawn didn't exactly set the gaming world ablaze, interest around Bloober Team has surged following their excellent Silent Hill 2 remake. The Polish developer currently has several projects in development: a remake of the original Silent Hill and a mysterious title codenamed Project M. The latter was confirmed in July 2024 and described as having a 'significantly smaller' budget than its other titles.
It remains unclear if the title is a Switch 2 exclusive, but it is certainly being built for Nintendo platforms. Last year, Bloober Team stated the game would appeal to fans of Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Limbo, and Eternal Darkness, while featuring a 'bold twist' not explored in a horror game before.
Now, Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno has further fueled anticipation with a LinkedIn post, asking what the Switch 2 can do for horror games that other platforms cannot. 'I have a question that's been on my mind for quite a while,' Babieno wrote. 'What could Nintendo Switch 2 do for horror games in a way that PC, PlayStation or Xbox simply wouldn't be able to replicate in quite the same way? I'm not even talking about raw power or graphics. More about how the platform itself can influence experience design: immersion, tension, player behaviour, portability, console features, controllers, the feeling of 'closeness' with the game, or even completely different approaches to building atmosphere.'
Babieno noted how he 'always appreciated' how Nintendo platforms 'often inspire design decisions you probably wouldn't make anywhere else.' He added, 'Honestly, that's what excites me the most. I'm not asking how to make horror more casual or 'safer'. Quite the opposite – how to create something uniquely 'Nintendo', while still remaining dark, disturbing and fully horror-driven.' He concluded, 'I already have my own thoughts, but I'm genuinely curious about yours. Of course — there's always a chance we're already working on something similar.'
In an interview with The Game Business, the studio expressed hope of making Nintendo a place where horror can thrive, between Project M and the Switch 2 port of Cronos: The New Dawn. 'I'm trying to make my personal dreams come true,' Babieno told the outlet. 'I am a huge Nintendo fan. I grew up with Nintendo consoles. The most important horrors, like Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil 4… were available on Nintendo GameCube. It was a gold time for Nintendo fans. In some ways, we would like to be the one to open a new chapter for Nintendo right now.'
If the game does leverage Switch hardware in unique ways, it certainly sounds more experimental than Bloober's past titles, which include The Medium, Blair Witch, and Layers Of Fear. As for when we might see this title, the next likely candidate is the rumoured Nintendo Direct in June.
