Pygmalion's Razor-Sharp Johannes-Passion: A Theatrical Bach Recording
Raphaël Pichon and his ensemble Pygmalion deliver a stunning new recording of Bach's Johannes-Passion, released on Harmonia Mundi. This album showcases incisive conducting and a fine lineup of soloists, bringing rich expression to Bach's dramatic oratorio, often considered his closest work to an opera.
Dramatic Intensity and Vocal Excellence
Pichon tears into the opening chorus with agonised cries, later whipping the singers into a frenzy during the demands for Barrabas' release and Christ's crucifixion. Pygmalion remains razor-sharp throughout, engaging vigorously with reflective chorale texts. The St John Passion relies heavily on the Evangelist, and German tenor Julien Prégardien excels in this role, his voice rising to an outraged shriek and conveying florid emotion in key moments.
Standout Soloist Performances
Huw Montague Rendall brings tonal richness and unswerving gravitas to Jesus, while Christian Immler's Pilate swings back and forth with agitation. In a fine lineup, Ying Fang's purity contrasts nicely with Lucile Richardot's otherworldliness, rounding off one of the most theatrical recordings of the St John Passion available.
