Netflix's new crime drama Nemesis, created by Courtney A Kemp (Power), may initially seem like a collection of familiar tropes, but it rapidly evolves into a ridiculously entertaining thriller. The series follows Detective Isaiah Stiles (Matthew Law), a maverick LAPD officer whose dedication to his job has strained his family life. He is haunted by a past case where a junior colleague was killed by a gang of elite thieves, and he believes the same crew is behind a recent bold heist at a high-stakes poker game.
A Battle of Wits
Isaiah's prime suspect is Coltrane Wilder (Y'lan Noel), a respected Black businessman who secretly masterminds the robberies. With insufficient evidence to arrest him, Isaiah risks his career by pursuing Coltrane. The show becomes a cat-and-mouse game reminiscent of Heat, as both men are driven but morally opposed. Subplots, such as their wives becoming friends, are predictable yet executed with flair.
Escalating Chaos
After establishing its premise in the first two episodes, Nemesis goes berserk with betrayals, unexpected alliances, and rising stakes. The heists grow more elaborate, Isaiah inches closer to being fired, and every minor detail proves crucial. The cast includes several The Wire alumni: Chris Bauer (Frank Sobotka), Domenick Lombardozzi (Herc), and Michael Potts (Brother Mouzone), who delivers a memorable rant about being in deep trouble.
Matthew Law and Y'lan Noel shine as the leads, with Law bringing a manic energy from his role in Abbott Elementary. The show balances thriller elements with occasional comedy, acknowledging its own absurdity. Nemesis is on Netflix now.
