Divisive and Strong Contenders

Florence’s Everybody Scream earned 4.5 stars from Metro, called ‘almost a perfect skip-free album.’ Dave returns with his third album, while Olivia Dean’s The Art of Loving debuted at No. 1. Kojey Radical’s ambitious Don’t Look Down, Dove Ellis’ debut Blizzard, and Knats’ hometown nomination are critical darlings. RAYE, who swept six Brit awards earlier in 2026—the most by any artist in one year—presents THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE. JADE delivers a major pop debut, Suede proves their enduring quality, and the charity compilation HELP(2) carries historical significance.

2025 Winner and Ceremony Location
Last year, Sam Fender won in his hometown of Newcastle, the first time the Mercury Prize was held outside London in its over 30-year history. The ceremony returns to Newcastle this October, described by Metro as a ‘testament to the growth of the north east’s music and creative arts scene.’ Fender’s album Rein Me In competed against a strong shortlist including Wolf Alice, CMAT, FKA Twigs, and Pulp. Pulp told Metro they ‘didn’t expect this reaction at all’ to their album and Glastonbury return. The prize also champions emerging artists like Jacob Alon, who received a standing ovation and later supported Lewis Capaldi, and PinkPantheress. Previous winners include English Teacher, Little Simz, Skepta, and Arctic Monkeys, while nominees have included Charli XCX, Oasis, and Amy Winehouse.
