London Tops Time Out's Best Cities for Culture 2026 Ranking
London Leads Time Out's 2026 Culture Ranking

London has officially been crowned the best city in the world for culture in 2026, outperforming renowned cultural hubs such as Paris and New York in a major global ranking. The British capital secured the top position in Time Out's Best Cities for Culture 2026 list, which surveyed over 24,000 people across 150 cities worldwide, alongside insights from more than 100 Time Out editors and cultural experts.

How the Ranking Was Determined

The ranking combined local sentiment and expert analysis across several categories, including affordability, quality of arts and culture, sense of community, and the strength of each city's cultural programme in 2026. London earned a remarkable 95 per cent expert rating and near-unanimous praise from locals, with 99 per cent of Londoners describing the city's arts and culture scene positively.

London's Cultural Strengths

London was praised for its world-class museums and galleries, many of which are completely free to visit. The report highlighted the newly opened V&A East and V&A East Storehouse in East London, as well as the highly anticipated reopening of the Museum of London in Smithfield later this year. Time Out noted: "No other city offers so many elite galleries and museums that are entirely free to visit – and new ones, all free and world-class, are still appearing all the time."

The capital's West End theatre district also received special praise, with the study acknowledging its A-list acting talent. Comedy nights and live music spanning avant-garde jazz, hyper-pop, and death metal further cemented London's position at number one. Additionally, 60 per cent of locals surveyed described the city's cultural offering as affordable, despite London's reputation as one of the world's most expensive cities.

Justine Simons OBE, London's Deputy Mayor for Culture and the Creative Industries, said: "What makes London special is that culture here is both world-class and accessible - powered by the diversity, talent and communities that shape the city every day. Big cities like London can be lonely places, but culture offers us human connection. Whether it's live theatre, music, dance floors or community workshops, culture brings people together, revitalises neighbourhoods and creates civic pride."
