After seeing him live three times, including a recent performance at Blackweir Fields in Cardiff on June 30, 2026, I can confidently say his gigs are a must-see, even for those who typically avoid sad songs.
A Triumphant Return After Hiatus
Capaldi stepped away from the spotlight following his 2023 Glastonbury performance, where he struggled to finish his set due to Tourette's Syndrome and mental health challenges. At his Cardiff show, he thanked fans for 'making it possible for me to come back,' calling the return 'lovely.' The 29-year-old has since achieved six number-one singles on the Official UK Singles Chart and two number-one albums in the UK. He also promised a new album after his summer gigs.
What to Expect at BST Hyde Park
Capaldi will be supported by British singer-songwriter Absolutely, Conan Gray, and Jacob Alon, the latter of whom also opened in Cardiff. The setlist includes 18 new and old songs, such as the ethereal cover of Britney Spears' 'Everytime' from his BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge and a snippet of Katy Perry's 'Teenage Dream.' He opened with 'Hollywood' and closed with a stunning rendition of 'Someone You Loved.'
One highlight was a heavier version of 'Pointless,' with rockier backing and altered time signatures that showcased his tight, flawless band. Capaldi also celebrated his guitarist's birthday on stage, leading the crowd in 'Happy Birthday,' and invited a young girl up after spotting her sign offering a bracelet.
Charisma and Comedy Shine
Despite his fame, Capaldi's genuine Scottish charm, comedic timing, and vulnerability shine through. He peppered the set with witty retorts and self-deprecating jokes, even laughing off a wrong starting chord with an expletive. His magnetism commands a 35,000-strong crowd, and his perfect vocals captivate from the first note of 'Grace,' which begins a cappella.
The only minor disappointment was his late arrival (9:15 pm instead of 8:45 pm), which clipped some comedic chit-chat between songs. Still, the overall experience was joyful and left me with a 'full cup.'
