French electronic musician Kavinsky, real name Vincent Belorgey, has died at the age of 50. The producer, famous for the iconic track 'Nightcall' featured in the 2011 film Drive, was discovered at his home in Paris after a neighbour alerted emergency services.
According to a police source speaking to Le Figaro, the suspected cause of death is a stroke. Belorgey had reportedly been complaining of headaches in recent days. Parisian authorities are investigating his death but stated that 'no suspicious elements' were found at his residence.
Career and Legacy
Born in Paris in 1975, Belorgey emerged from the rich French electronic music scene that followed Daft Punk. His debut single 'Testarossa Autodrive' (2006) aligned with the 'blog house' movement, alongside artists like Justice and SebastiAn. He signed with Record Makers, releasing five EPs and two albums.
'Nightcall', co-produced with Daft Punk's Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and featuring Brazilian singer Lovefoxxx, became his defining work. The track has been streamed over half a billion times on Spotify and garnered 350 million YouTube plays. It reached the French Top 10 upon release, and a version performed at the 2024 Paris Olympics hit No. 3.

Belorgey performed 'Nightcall' at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, backed by French band Phoenix and Belgian singer Angèle. French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute, calling him 'a source of French pride forever.' Culture minister Catherine Pégard added: 'France loses one of its most singular voices. From Drive to the Paris Olympics, the entire world had pulsed to Nightcall.'
Musical Style and Influence
Kavinsky's sound, influenced by 1980s cinematic synths and vintage Ferrari references, was encapsulated in his debut album Outrun (2013), which reached No. 2 in France. The album told the story of a young man who crashes a Ferrari Testarossa in the 80s and returns as a zombie in the 00s. He released a second album, Reborn, in 2022. The Weeknd appeared on a remix of Kavinsky's 'Odd Look', and the two had discussed future collaborations.
