Haribo, the German confectionery giant known for its gummy sweets, has released its first-ever chocolate bar in collaboration with Ritter Sport, another German brand. The new product combines Ritter Sport's milk chocolate with Haribo's Balla Bites fruit gummies in red, green, and yellow flavours. This marks the first time in Haribo's 100-year history that it has been sold as part of a chocolate bar, and also the first time the two brands have appeared on the same packaging.
The 100g bars will retail for £2 each and are set to appear on supermarket shelves at Lidl, Tesco, and Sainsbury's across the UK starting in September. The product is a limited-edition snack, so consumers will need to purchase it quickly if they want to try it.
Mixed Reactions from Food Fans
Reactions to the announcement have been divided. On Facebook, Jessica Walker described the collaboration as 'absolutely amazing,' and Ebony Bray said they 'need this'. However, on Instagram, @trishala.483 commented: 'The two textures sound like a sensory nightmare, ngl.' Another user, @jadore1, admitted they are 'not a fan of sweets in chocolate' but found the 'packaging is adorable.' On Facebook, Callum Lawton expressed that while they like Balla Bites, the thought of mixing them with chocolate is 'nasty.'
Despite the mixed feedback, Benedict Daniels, managing director of Ritter Sport UK and Ireland, is confident in the partnership. 'Some collaborations feel so natural that you wonder why nobody has done them before,' he said. 'We've spent more than 100 years making quality chocolate and Haribo has been creating moments of childlike happiness for generations. Bringing the two together has allowed us to create something that's genuinely surprising and fun.'
Other Recent Confectionery Collaborations
Haribo and Ritter Sport are not the only confectionery brands to team up recently. Biscoff and Toblerone have released the Biscoff Toblerone Diamond Truffles, which feature a caramelised biscuit filling from Biscoff, along with honey and almond nougat pieces. Unlike the traditional Toblerone shape, these are smaller chocolates but retain much of the traditional flavour. The product is already available at Tesco for £6 for a 180g packet, while Ocado and Sainsbury's are charging £6.75. The description markets them as 'packed with luxury deliciousness as a sweet present' and 'perfect for gifting or sharing at special gatherings,' promising to 'bring joy to every festive moment.'
In other chocolate news, last month M&S revived four retro chocolate bars: Jet, Now, Sparks, and Coconut Grove. These were first sold as part of M&S's 80s confectionery range, and their return has been welcomed by those who remember them. The bars are priced at £1 each and feature the St Michael logo, a brand owned and used by M&S between 1927 and 2000.
Availability and Impact
The Haribo and Ritter Sport chocolate bar is expected to generate significant interest due to its novelty and limited availability. With a price point of £2, it is positioned as an affordable treat for consumers. The collaboration highlights a trend of confectionery brands joining forces to create innovative products, potentially influencing future partnerships in the industry. As the September launch approaches, shoppers will be watching to see if the bar lives up to the hype or falls short of expectations.
