A new study has uncovered the formula for the perfect breakup song, with nearly a third of Brits open to releasing their own heartbreak track. Commissioned by viagogo and inspired by Lily Allen's West End Girl, the poll of 2,000 UK adults reveals how music becomes a solace during emotional turmoil.
Key Findings on Breakup Music
Almost half of respondents believe their past relationships could inspire a song, while 39% say they have experienced a breakup dramatic enough to fill an entire album. Seven in ten agree that the best songs stem from real heartbreak, and over half think messy or chaotic endings produce the most memorable tracks.
Ingredients of a Breakup Anthem
The research identifies the ideal breakup song: a runtime of 3 minutes and 2 seconds, lyrics focused on empowerment and moving on, and best enjoyed during a bedroom listening session after a split. Female artists dominate the heartbreak charts, with 32% saying women create the best breakup songs compared to 11% for men. Adele's Someone Like You and Beyoncé's Irreplaceable top the list of go-to breakup tracks.
viagogo Offers Studio Experience
viagogo is giving heartbroken music fans the chance to turn their experiences into professionally produced tracks. Participants will collaborate with PATCH, a producer who worked with Simon Cowell's Netflix boyband December 10, along with established songwriters and artists. Across three studio dates, they will transform personal stories into fully produced songs, ready to share online and release on Spotify.
The production team also includes British songwriter Conan Mac, who has collaborated with Bastille, Lucky Love, and Issac Frank. PATCH commented: "Everyone has a story worth soundtracking. People don't always realise how much emotion they're carrying until they start talking about it. Breakups are universal, but the way people experience them is incredibly personal."
A booking page will be announced in the week of May 25 on viagogo's social media channels.
