EastEnders boss teases Max Branning's flashforward downfall

EastEnders boss Ben Wadey has dropped new clues about the flashforward storyline, suggesting that Max Branning (played by Jake Wood) will make numerous enemies before the New Year's Day reveal. The producer's comments come as the soap approaches the resolution of its January 2027 flashforward, which teased a wedding, an affair, a murder, new babies, and a hostage situation.

Max Branning's Bingo of Enemies

Speaking about the upcoming episodes, Wadey revealed that Max will be at the center of conflict in the coming weeks. 'There's going to be a lot going on, and we can play a game over autumn called "How many people can Max Branning p*** off before New Year's Day?" The answer is quite a lot actually, so tick them off on your bingo list!' he said.

The flashforward, which aired at the start of 2026, showed Max being forced to choose which of his children, Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) or Oscar (Pierre Counihan-Moullier), should live as a mystery gunman holds them hostage. Wadey hinted that Max's actions will lead to this dire situation, though he stopped short of revealing specifics.

Wedding Wars and Fox-Trueman Struggles

Before the hostage crisis, Max is set to marry Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins), but the ceremony won't go smoothly. 'We do a bit of wedding wars,' Wadey teased. 'Cindy and Max – what can possibly go wrong?'

Meanwhile, Kim Fox (Tameka Empson) and Howie Danes (Delroy Atkinson) are also preparing to tie the knot, but their wedding comes amid family turmoil. Denise (Diane Parish) has been diagnosed with leukaemia and is undergoing chemotherapy, prompting the Fox-Truemans to push forward with the celebration.

'There's a real sustained effort on the part of the Fox-Truemans to keep the family buoyant and afloat. Is it because they need to get it done so Denise can actually be there and witness the wedding?' Wadey asked, adding that scenes from the September wedding day left him 'crying with laughter' due to the contrast between the two couples' situations.

Flashforward Future Uncertain

Wadey praised the writing team for their work on the storyline, noting that 'some of our longest-serving and most talented writers putting their biggest brains across the episodes. They are quite something.'

He also confirmed that the flashforward episode's wedding may not be Max's only nuptials, leaving fans to speculate whether he will marry Cindy again or someone else. As the year progresses, viewers can expect more clues about the gunman's identity and the fate of Lauren and Oscar, with Wadey promising 'a lot going on' before the New Year's Day resolution.
