Tour de France and Typhoon Bavi

Meanwhile, in Taiwan, a fisher handled a rope near a fishing boat as waves crashed over a breakwater before the arrival of Typhoon Bavi, which is forecast to be one of the strongest storms in decades, captured by I-Hwa Cheng for AFP/Getty Images.
In Keelung, Taiwan, statues outside the Dianji temple were covered with protective tarpaulins before Typhoon Bavi, which has already triggered a deadly landslide in the Philippines, according to reports.
Extreme Weather Events
In Beijing, China, two women carrying an umbrella walked in heavy rain after the city issued its first amber rainstorm alert of the year and evacuated nearly 100,000 residents, as photographed by Maxim Shemetov for Reuters.
In Almería, Spain, a firefighting helicopter dumped water over a wildfire in Los Gallardos. At least 12 people have been killed and 23 are unaccounted for after one of Spain’s deadliest wildfires broke out in the south-eastern province, according to Reuters.
In Die, France, a wildfire burned in the hills above the south-east French town. Officials said wildfires have burned through twice as much land in France so far this year as in the same period in 2025. France is facing its third heatwave since May, as reported by Manon Cruz for Reuters.
Heatwave in the UK and Europe
In Maidenhead, UK, a rower sculled on the Thames during the country’s third heatwave of 2026. The heatwave is to continue next week as forecasters confirmed that last month was western Europe’s hottest June on record, as photographed by Jonathan Brady for PA.
In Dunsden Green, UK, the sun rose over countryside in Oxfordshire at the beginning of another hot day. The Met Office said temperatures of 35C or higher have now been recorded in May, June and July of the same year for the first time in the UK, according to Geoffrey Swaine for Shutterstock.
In Henley, UK, visitors watched fireworks as the sun set over the Thames during the Henley festival. The annual music and arts festival relaxed its black tie dress code for audience members on its opening day because of the heatwave, captured by James Robinson.
Goodwood Festival and Sports
In Chichester, UK, a Bugatti and an Alfa Romeo P3 (Tipo B) were driven up the hill during the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which runs until Sunday, as photographed by Simon Galloway for Getty Images.
In El Dabaa, Egypt, fans gathered to welcome the Egypt men’s football team at El Alamein airport before an official reception hosted by President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi. Egypt were knocked out of the 2026 World Cup by Argentina on Tuesday, according to Mohamed Abdel Ghany for Reuters.
Displacement and Tourism
In La Guaira, Venezuela, people displaced by last month’s double earthquake gathered at a temporary shelter. The official death toll from the twin quakes passed 3,810 this week as Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, renewed calls for international sanctions on the country to be lifted to assist the recovery, as reported by Anadolu/Getty Images.
