Janette Beckman's iconic street photography, spanning four decades, is now on display at Seattle's Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) in the exhibit Rebels + Icons: The Photography of Janette Beckman. Running until 18 April 2027, the show features over 700 archival and newly taken images that capture the raw energy and diversity of New York City streets.
A Lens on New York's Soul
Beckman, known for photographing musical legends like Salt-N-Pepa and Run-DMC, brings her striking approach to street photography. Her work documents the city's ever-changing landscape, from the Puerto Rican Day parade to everyday moments in Brooklyn. In the 1990s, she became obsessed with wandering the streets with her Hasselblad camera, taking trains to random stops and approaching strangers for portraits.
Iconic Images and Stories
The exhibit includes images like Brothers Danny and Carlos Rosa at the Puerto Rican Day parade (1995), Winston playing the lottery in Brooklyn (1994), and Minnie in her Easter hat in Harlem (2015). Beckman describes the New York of the 1990s as having 'flava'—real, in-your-face people from all over the world, with music playing loud everywhere. She continues to document the city today and teaches a street portrait class at the School of Visual Arts.
