The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge has been awarded the prestigious Art Fund Museum of the Year 2026, taking home a £100,000 prize. The museum was praised for its bold reimagining of its collections and deep engagement with local communities.
Innovative Exhibitions and Community Focus
Judges highlighted the museum's recent exhibitions, including a groundbreaking display of contemporary art alongside ancient artefacts, and its work with diverse groups across Cambridgeshire. Director Luke Syson said the prize was a "huge honour" and would support future projects.
Competition and Judging
The Fitzwilliam saw off competition from four other shortlisted museums: the Museum of the Home in London, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, the Newlyn Art Gallery in Cornwall, and the Ulster Museum in Belfast. The award, now in its 12th year, is run by the Art Fund charity.
Impact of the Prize
Chair of judges Jenny Waldman said the museum "stood out for its vision and energy, creating a space that is both scholarly and welcoming." The £100,000 prize will fund new acquisitions and educational programmes.
