The Barbican Centre has unveiled a new exhibition dedicated entirely to the year 1996, a period widely regarded as the peak of the Britpop era. Curated by Dominic Mohan, former entertainment editor of The Sun, the exhibition offers a nostalgic journey back to a time when the Spice Girls and Oasis dominated headlines, and the country stood on the cusp of the New Labour government, ushering in a new era of 'Girl Power.'
1996 was the year of iconic moments such as the release of 'Wannabe,' the legendary Oasis shows at Knebworth, and the UEFA European Championship. However, the exhibition goes beyond these well-known events to explore the myriad cultural shifts that made 1996 a truly seismic year. Here are five of the most remarkable exhibits to see at the Barbican's 1996 exhibition.
Geri Halliwell's Union Jack Boots
One of the most iconic fashion statements of the 1990s, Geri Halliwell's chunky Union Jack platform boots are on display. While they gained widespread attention at the 1997 Brit Awards, Halliwell first debuted them in 1996, symbolizing the bold, patriotic, and unapologetically feminine spirit of the Spice Girls.
Liam Gallagher's Tambourine
Few pairings are as iconic as Liam Gallagher and his tambourine. During the recent Oasis reunion tour, Gallagher was spotted wearing the percussive instrument on his head, but now a similar tambourine is safely enclosed behind glass at the Barbican. This exhibit captures the raw energy and attitude of Britpop's most famous frontman.
A Brit Award Trophy
The 1990s marked the zenith of the Brit Awards, a time when bands like Oasis would deliver expletive-laden speeches from the stage. Noel Gallagher famously cursed during the 1996 ceremony, encapsulating the era's rebellious spirit. The exhibition features stories from that memorable night, alongside the coveted trophy itself.
Iconic Photography
The exhibition celebrates historical photography from leading creatives of the era, including Jill Furmanovsky and Derek Ridgers, two of the most acclaimed photographers of the 1990s. Visitors can expect a mix of famous shots and lesser-known surprises that capture the essence of the decade.
Original Concert Flyers
A treasure trove of memorabilia from 1996 and the surrounding period is on display, including flyers from pop and rock gigs of the time. Personal items donated by top DJs such as Paul Oakenfold, Dave Pearce, and Judge Jules are also featured. These artifacts span the worlds of fashion, food, art, politics, and music, offering a comprehensive look at the cultural landscape of 1996.
