A startling new survey has revealed that supernatural beliefs are far from dead in modern England, with a significant portion of the population holding firm convictions about life beyond the grave.
The Numbers Behind the Night
According to comprehensive research conducted by YouGov, exactly one-third of adults in England—representing 33% of the population—firmly believe that ghosts walk among us. The findings suggest that in an age of scientific advancement, traditional beliefs about the paranormal continue to haunt the national consciousness.
Generational Ghost Stories
Perhaps most surprisingly, the research uncovered that younger generations are leading the charge in paranormal belief. Among those aged 18 to 24, a remarkable 44% expressed belief in ghosts, significantly higher than the national average. This challenges conventional wisdom that supernatural beliefs are primarily held by older generations.
The survey also revealed:
- 34% of respondents believe in some form of afterlife
 - Women (37%) are more likely to believe in ghosts than men (29%)
 - Londoners show the highest regional belief at 40%

Beyond the Veil: Other Paranormal Beliefs
The research didn't stop at ghostly apparitions. It explored a wider spectrum of supernatural convictions across the English population:
Additional findings include:
- 26% believe in the existence of heaven
 - 20% put faith in astrology and horoscopes
 - 19% believe in reincarnation
 - 15% think aliens have visited Earth

A Nation Divided
Despite the significant numbers expressing belief, the survey also highlighted substantial skepticism. Nearly half of respondents (48%) stated they definitely do not believe in ghosts, while 18% remain uncertain, hovering between belief and disbelief.
The research paints a fascinating picture of a nation where ancient beliefs coexist with modern skepticism, proving that when it comes to the supernatural, England remains very much a country of both believers and non-believers.
