The beautiful National Trust spring walk 90 minutes from London is one of the best places to see blossom this season. It's perfect for a Bank Holiday Monday outing.
Why Visit Sissinghurst Castle Garden?
Spring has well and truly sprung, bringing with it some of the country's most beautiful flowers. Blossom, particularly cherry blossom, is often sought after by Instagram influencers eager for the perfect snap. But you don't need to be social media-savvy to enjoy it. While there are spots in London like Swiss Cottage and Greenwich Park, why not make a real day trip out of it? Hop on a train to Kent and visit Sissinghurst Castle Garden and Estate, a National Trust property roughly 90 minutes from London by car or public transport.
Getting There
You can take a train from London Bridge to Staplehurst, followed by a 15-minute bus ride. If driving, take the M25 to the A21, then a straightforward route to the estate.
The Blossom Trail
The Telegraph recently ranked Sissinghurst second on its list of the country's best places to find blossom, just behind Raby Castle in County Durham. The full trail is three miles, taking about 90 minutes for a leisurely stroll. Hardcore hikers might prefer the Kent Downs. Keep dogs on leads due to wildlife.
Facilities and Activities
There's a restaurant, café, shop selling plants, and a second-hand bookshop. Spring is the best time to visit. The Castle Garden was curated by writer Vita Sackville-West and politician Harold Nicolson as 'a refuge dedicated to beauty'. Private tours are available from 9am to 11am for £35 per person.
For families, a free butterfly trail runs from May 23 to 31 during May Half Term. In early August, outdoor theatre returns with a production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. Tickets are available online.
