Michael Pennington, the celebrated British actor known for his commanding Shakespearean performances and as a co-founder of the English Shakespeare Company, has died at the age of 80. He passed away peacefully at his home in London, surrounded by family, after a long illness.
A Life Dedicated to the Stage
Pennington's career spanned more than five decades, during which he became one of the most respected classical actors of his generation. Born in 1946 in Cambridge, he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made his professional debut in 1967.
Shakespearean Legacy
He was particularly acclaimed for his portrayals of Hamlet, King Lear, and Richard III. His interpretation of Hamlet was praised for its intellectual depth and emotional range. In 1986, he co-founded the English Shakespeare Company with director Michael Bogdanov, touring productions worldwide.
Pennington also appeared in numerous television dramas, including Doctor Who and Midsomer Murders, and in films such as The Madness of King George.
