Lord Haskins: A Yorkshire Farmer with a Global Conscience and Vision
Lord Haskins: Yorkshire Farmer with Global Vision

More than four decades ago, I first encountered Christopher Haskins while strolling with my dog along a public footpath that traversed his farm in the quaint village of Skidby, located in the East Riding of Yorkshire. From that initial meeting, it was immediately apparent that he was far from the stereotypical local farmer.

A Distinctive Presence in Rural Yorkshire

Haskins stood out with his unmistakable Irish accent, adding a unique flair to the Yorkshire countryside. His sheepdog, named Jomo in honor of Jomo Kenyatta, the leader who guided Kenya to independence, hinted at his broader worldview. Over time, I had the privilege of meeting him alongside other notable figures such as Tutu, Tambo, and Mbeki, reflecting his deep connections to global social movements.

Activism Rooted in Student Days

Together with his wife, Gilda, Haskins had been a fervent campaigner against apartheid in South Africa since their student years in Dublin. This commitment to justice was a cornerstone of his character, shaping many of his life's endeavors.

Wide-Ranging Conversations and Interests

Our discussions were remarkably diverse, covering topics from cricket and the birdlife on his farm to the city of Hull, where we both were employed. We also delved into the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, a cause for which he and Gilda had actively marched, and the intricate politics of the Labour party, showcasing his multifaceted engagement with societal issues.

A Recognition of Vision and Advocacy

In 1999, I was honored to propose him for an honorary degree at the University of Hull. In my nomination, I described him as "a businessman of vision and advocate for social justice," a fitting tribute to his dual legacy of entrepreneurial success and humanitarian efforts.

Lord Haskins' life exemplified how local roots in Yorkshire farming could intertwine with global activism, leaving a lasting impact on both his community and broader social justice causes. His story serves as an inspiration, reminding us of the power of combining practical business skills with a steadfast commitment to ethical principles.
