Coronation Street star Alan Rothwell has died at the age of 89. The actor, best known for portraying original cobbles character David Barlow, made his debut in the ITV soap’s very first episode in 1960. He also appeared in Brookside as Nicholas Black.
Alan Rothwell's Career
Born in 1937 in Oldham, Lancashire, Rothwell was no stranger to soap operas, having played Jimmy Grange in The Archers before landing the role of David Barlow in Coronation Street. David was the brother of Street legend Ken Barlow, and the character was notably different from Ken, pursuing a football career rather than literature. David was forced to retire after a match injury.
Coronation Street's Tribute
The news of Rothwell’s passing was confirmed by Coronation Street’s official social media account. The statement read: 'We’re very sorry to hear of Alan Rothwell’s passing and extend our sincerest condolences to his family at this very sad time. He created an iconic and memorable character in David Barlow and will forever be remembered as one of the original cast members of Coronation Street.'
Role in Coronation Street
Rothwell played David on and off across eight years. He was a regular cast member from December 1960 to June 1961, then made sporadic appearances in 1963 and 1964, before returning as a mainstay from 1964 to 1968. His character was a footballer, a stark contrast to Ken's literary interests.
Rothwell also portrayed Nicholas Black in Brookside between 1985 and 1986. This is a breaking story, and more details are expected to follow.
