Lorenzo restaurant in Crystal Palace closing after 41 years (12.10.2026)

Lorenzo, the family-run Italian restaurant on Westow Hill in Crystal Palace, will serve its final meal on Sunday, November 22, ending 41 years of operation. The restaurant first opened in 1985 and has become a cornerstone of the local community, hosting generations of diners for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, and other milestones.

Closure announced on Facebook

In a Facebook post, the Lorenzo family announced the closure and thanked customers for their support over the decades. The statement described the restaurant as "so much more than a restaurant," calling it their life's work and a place that brought generations together over food and shared memories.

The family cited rising costs and the challenges facing independent restaurants as key factors in the decision. They also revealed that founder Lorenzo, who will celebrate his 88th birthday in November, is looking forward to spending more time with family and enjoying a slower pace of life.

Community response overwhelming

Following the announcement, the restaurant said it had been "overwhelmed" by the response. In a follow-up post, the family noted the "hundreds of beautiful messages, comments, memories and kind words" that highlighted how much the restaurant meant to the community.

More than 204 comments were left on the original closure announcement, with many expressing sadness and describing Lorenzo as a Crystal Palace institution. Customers used words like "heartbreaking" and "the end of an era," with one writing, "Crystal Palace won't be the same without it."

Decades of memories and loyal customers

Many comments reflected the restaurant's role in family life, with diners recalling birthdays, graduations, weddings, first dates, and Christmas celebrations. One customer wrote, "My most favourite restaurant in Crystal Palace, where I had my first date with my future wife." Another said, "My kids grew up with birthdays at Lorenzo's."

Long-time customers shared memories of visiting since 1985, with several saying they had returned regularly for 30 or even 40 years. Customers frequently praised the hospitality of Lorenzo, Natalie, and the wider family, noting they felt treated like friends rather than customers. Former staff members also described the restaurant as a family environment that created lifelong friendships.

Lorenzo will remain open until November 22, and the family encourages customers to visit during its final weeks and share their memories. Many commenters said they were already planning a final visit, suggesting the restaurant's last weeks will be among its busiest.
