Zootropolis 2 Sets Streaming Date Following Historic Box Office Run
Film enthusiasts have reason to celebrate as the highest-grossing Hollywood animation of all time, Zootropolis 2, is poised to make its streaming debut very soon. This record-breaking sequel to the beloved Disney classic, widely praised for its timeless appeal and hailed as "the best childhood movie," created a massive cultural impact upon its release in late 2025.
Return to the Mammal Metropolis
Picking up just a week after the events of the 2016 original Zootropolis (known as Zootopia in the United States), the film reunites audiences with the iconic odd-couple duo: optimistic rabbit Judy Hopps, voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin, and the cunning fox Nick Wilde, brought to life by Jason Bateman. Now officially partnered as detectives for the Zootopia Police Department (ZPD), following their previous success in uncovering a predator disappearance conspiracy, the pair face a new, slithery threat.
A mysterious reptile named Gary De'Snake, voiced by Oscar-winning actor Ke Huy Quan, arrives in Zootopia, sending shockwaves through the mammal-dominated city. Snakes have been absent from the area for years, making his appearance particularly alarming. As Nick and Judy go undercover in unfamiliar districts of the city, their investigation plunges them into dangerous conspiracies and shadowy realms. They must race to clear their names after being framed, navigating a complex web of deceit.
Star-Studded Voice Cast and Critical Acclaim
The sequel boasts an impressive ensemble voice cast. Newcomers include Andy Samberg, David Strathairn, Patrick Warburton, Macaulay Culkin, Brenda Song, Danny Trejo, and Quinta Brunson, portraying a variety of fresh animal characters. They join returning favorites such as Idris Elba as Chief Bogo, Shakira as Gazelle, and Nate Torrence as Clawhauser.
Upon its December release, Zootropolis 2 achieved a monumental box office haul of $1.85 billion, surpassing multiple Disney records—including that of Inside Out 2—to become the highest-grossing animated film under the Motion Picture Association (MPA) banner in history. Globally, only China's Ne Zha 2, with $2.2 billion from an earlier 2025 release, has earned more.
The film has garnered widespread critical and audience praise. It holds an impressive 91% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, with an even higher audience score of 96%. Reviews have lauded it as "just as charming and arguably funnier than its predecessor" and "way better than it had any right to be."
The Radio Times commended the film, stating, "Featuring a winning lead pairing, pacey chase sequences and a richly realised world, the film builds on its predecessor’s appeal with charm, energy and the wittiest nod to The Shining in a kids’ movie yet." Meanwhile, HeyUGuys described it as "a genuine crowd-pleaser."
The Hollywood Reporter added, "This sequel to 2016’s smash hit Oscar-winning animated film proves more than worth the lengthy wait, knocking it out of the park with its dazzling visuals, sophisticated humor and doses of genuine emotion."
Awards Recognition and Streaming Details
The success of Zootropolis 2 has extended to the awards circuit. The film has already secured a BAFTA for Best Animated Feature and is currently nominated for an Oscar ahead of the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony in less than two weeks.
Following its theatrical triumph, the film will hop directly onto home screens. Zootropolis 2 will begin streaming exclusively on Disney Plus starting Wednesday, March 11. This highly anticipated digital release allows fans to experience the adventure, humor, and heart of this record-setting animation from the comfort of their own homes.
