Fernandez posts then deletes mocking Instagram story
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has sparked controversy by mocking England on social media following Argentina's 2-1 World Cup semi-final victory. Fernandez, who scored Argentina's equaliser in the match, reposted an image of himself laughing alongside Lionel Messi with Oasis' 'Wonderwall' playing in the background. The song has been adopted by England as their unofficial World Cup anthem and is a post-match ritual between players and fans.
After receiving backlash from supporters, Fernandez removed the repost and instead shared the same image without the audio. The original post had been widely circulated on social media, drawing criticism for its perceived disrespect.
Tensions boil over after full-time whistle
The semi-final in Atlanta was ill-tempered, with tensions spilling over after the final whistle. Jude Bellingham slapped Argentina substitute Valentin Barco on the back of the head during the altercations. Additionally, Argentina's players celebrated with a banner reading 'Las Malvinas son Argentinas' (The Falklands are Argentine), which could lead to FIFA sanctions.
Fernandez's actions come amid his uncertain future at Chelsea. The midfielder is reportedly pushing to leave the club after they finished 10th in the Premier League last season. His agent, Javier Pastore, stated earlier this month: "Today the player is calmly thinking about the national team, he is playing in a World Cup, he is very close to reaching the round of 16. He is only thinking about that and we are looking at possibilities to leave Chelsea but there is nothing firm or confirmed at any club."
Chelsea's social media post adds fuel
Chelsea also angered England supporters by sharing a photo of Fernandez's celebration during the semi-final win with the caption 'Enzo Fernandez' and an explosion emoji. The club's post was seen as insensitive given the heated nature of the match.
New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has insisted he wants to keep Fernandez at Stamford Bridge. "We have spoken," Alonso said this week. "But, as you can understand, what we said will remain private." However, Real Madrid issued a statement earlier this month denying interest in signing Fernandez this summer.
Argentina will face Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday, while England's campaign ended in disappointment.
