TV Tonight: Lynley Returns, Soap Crashes & Victorian Murder
TV Tonight: Lynley reboot and Victorian murder mystery

Television viewers are in for a treat this evening with a lineup featuring a major detective drama comeback, a chaotic soap opera collision, and a deep dive into a chilling historical mystery.

A New Era for a Classic Detective Duo

The spotlight tonight falls on the long-awaited return of a beloved police procedural. Leo Suter, known for roles in Sanditon and Vikings: Valhalla, takes on the iconic role of DI Tommy Lynley in a polished reboot of the 2000s series. Based on Elizabeth George's novels, the show airs at 8.30pm on BBC One.

Suter's aristocratic inspector is paired with the distinctly working-class DS Barbara Havers, played by Sofia Barclay. Havers initially dismisses her new partner as a clueless "fresh-faced city boy." However, as this chalk-and-cheese pairing delves into their first murder investigation, their contrasting methods might just prove they are an effective, if unlikely, dream team.

Soap Opera Mayhem and Documentary Insights

Earlier in the evening, ITV1 hosts a television event pitched as a "super soap crossover." At 8pm, the worlds of Emmerdale and Coronation Street explosively collide in a special episode titled Corriedale. The drama unfolds as Carl from Coronation Street drink-drives with Debbie, while Emmerdale's Lisa and Betsy speed recklessly nearby. Their paths catastrophically cross on a stormy night, leading to a major crash between Hotton and Weatherfield. Expect high tension with fan favourites like Aaron and Charity Dingle at the heart of the action.

Also at 8pm, on Channel 4, the documentary Protein: Everything You Need to Know sees presenter Gemma Atkinson examining the modern consumer obsession with protein. The film questions whether the trend of adding protein to everything from pizza to alcohol is scientifically justified or simply a dietary fad.

Quiz Finals and Grisly Historical Investigations

Quiz fans can enjoy the conclusion of the second round on University Challenge at 8.30pm on BBC Two. Hosted by Amol Rajan, the episode sees Churchill College, Cambridge battle Merton College, Oxford for the last remaining place in the quarter-finals.

The evening takes a darker turn at 9pm on BBC Two with Lucy Worsley’s Victorian Murder Club. The historian applies her signature style to a notorious true crime case, aiming to crack the mystery of the Victorian Thames Torso Murderer. She begins with the first known case from 1887, where a lower torso was found in the river. Other body parts were subsequently discovered across London, from Temple to Battersea and Regent’s Canal. Worsley enlists a specialist team to piece together the gruesome puzzle, seeking answers about both the unidentified serial killer and his victims.

Finally, Channel 5 brings back its real-life crime series Murder Suspect No 1 at 9pm. Cameras follow Lancashire police from the initial 999 call after a man is beaten to death in a basement squat. The investigation takes several unexpected twists, leaving detectives to determine if the arrested man is the true culprit or a potential second victim.
