What is Spider-Noir?

Spider-Noir, also known as Spider-Man Noir, is an alternate-dimension version of Spider-Man from Earth-90214. This universe is inspired by hardboiled crime noir and is set during the Great Depression. The character possesses similar powers to Peter Parker but features organic webbing and gained abilities from an ancient spider-god rather than a radioactive spider.

The character first appeared in comics in Spider-Man: Noir #1 in February 2009 and made his cinematic debut in the 2018 animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, where he was voiced by Nicolas Cage.

Series Details and Cast

The live-action series follows Ben Reilly (played by Nicolas Cage), a down-on-his-luck detective in 1930s New York who grapples with his past as the city's only superhero following a personal tragedy. Co-showrunner Oren Uziel revealed to Esquire that this is not an origin story: "Ben Reilly has already gone through the entire arc and has seen it all. He's over it and trying to move past it. But his past kind of keeps coming back to haunt him."

The supporting cast includes:

  • Li Jun Li as a variant of Black Cat
  • Karen Rodriguez as Janet, Ben's "smart and scrappy" secretary
  • Lamorne Morris as Robbie Robertson, Ben's best friend and a journalist
  • Brendan Gleeson as the crimeboss Silvermane
  • Jack Huston as Flint Marko/The Sandman

Villains and Storyline

Ben Reilly will face off against Silvermane and his hired goon, The Sandman. Uziel explained the narrative structure: "In all the great detective stories, you have two cases that sort of come together, and you realize you're actually working the same thing. [Ben's] a guy getting dragged into a much larger fight that he doesn't really want to be a part of."

He added: "Silvermane is the big bad, but what's happening to Silvermane connects back to Ben's past and gets him spiraling deeper and deeper into his own origins."

Release Date and Fan Anticipation

Despite the overwhelming excitement, an official release date for Spider-Noir has not been announced. Fan reactions on Reddit echo the impatience, with user Obiwanhellothere09 noting: "The image with Nicolas Cage goes insanely hard," and Most_Common8114 summing up the collective sentiment: "Bro... I NEED THIS NOW!"

The series promises to deliver a unique take on the superhero genre, blending noir aesthetics with Marvel mythology, and has already positioned itself as a highly anticipated addition to Amazon Prime's lineup.
