Sophie Turner has promised that her upcoming Amazon Prime Video series, 'Steal', will have audiences completely captivated from the very first moment. The six-episode heist thriller is set to premiere on the streaming platform on January 21, 2026.
An Ordinary Life Turned Upside Down
Turner, famed for her roles in Game of Thrones and the X-Men franchise, takes on the part of Zara, an ordinary office worker whose life is violently upended. When a gang of ruthless thieves storms her London workplace, Zara and her best friend Luke, played by Archie Madekwe, are forced to comply with their demands to steal billions from people's pension funds.
Speaking ahead of the launch, the 29-year-old actress revealed that the script's depth immediately drew her in. She was struck by how 'grounded in truth' the characters felt, noting the story highlights 'how multifaceted people can be' and that 'no one's black or white'.
'It's like they're all so grey and I think it makes the series more exciting because it does feel real and they're also, all of them, very unpredictable,' Turner explained. 'That's what kept me hooked reading it.'
A 'Freeing' Role and Complex Characters
Despite the high-stress scenario, Turner described Zara as one of the most 'freeing' characters she has ever portrayed. 'Zara is quite a wild child, and a bit unpredictable, and she just kind of falls to the wall, and I really liked that about her. So she was fun for me,' she said.
Her co-star, Archie Madekwe, found his role as the panicked Luke to be physically and emotionally draining. 'He's constantly crying, understandably, probably. I would,' the 30-year-old Saltburn actor admitted. 'Even though it was warranted and in the scenes it was fun, it was quite exhausting.'
Madekwe also teased the intricate plot, stating: 'Everything's so tied up in a knot… they've tried so hard to get themselves out of the situation they're in. That is the thing that's still so compelling and exciting because it feels so deeply human.'
A Detective with a Hidden Struggle
The series also stars Jacob Fortune-Lloyd as DCI Rhys Kovac, a detective battling a gambling addiction who is tasked with investigating the colossal heist. The Wolf Hall actor, 37, conducted detailed research for the part, meeting with a former murder detective and a professional poker player.
Fortune-Lloyd expressed relief that his character broke the mould of a standard TV detective. 'There's the poker addiction, which is an interesting angle, and there's also the fact that his name's Kovac, he's got Romanian heritage… it adds a nice new layer,' he said. This complexity results in what he calls a 'ruthless, cold, calculated' and ultimately 'very cool' character.
All actors faced the challenge of mastering the 'complex language' of financial fraud and police procedure, a task Fortune-Lloyd described as particularly difficult to make sound natural.
'Steal' was created and written by crime novelist Sotiris Nikias in his screenwriting debut. Each of the six episodes runs for approximately 45 minutes. The series launches globally on Amazon Prime Video on January 21, 2026.
