Scrubs Reboot Ignites Fan Fury Over Missing Janitor Character
Reviving a beloved television series is a delicate endeavor, akin to piecing together a shattered plate. Despite the inherent challenges, numerous popular TV sitcoms are choosing this moment to resurrect their shows. Following announcements like the Malcolm in the Middle revival and The Inbetweeners return, the official Scrubs reboot, confirmed in July 2025, has now released its first trailer, sparking intense reactions from dedicated viewers.
Fan Outrage Over Janitor's Absence
After the trailer debuted, fans quickly noted the return of familiar faces including JD (Zach Braff), Christopher Turk (Donald Faison), Carla Espinosa (Judy Reyes), Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke), and chief of medicine Bob Kelso (Ken Jenkins). However, the conspicuous absence of the Janitor, portrayed by Neil Flynn, who famously engaged in memorable rivalries with JD, has left many viewers furious. Social media platforms erupted with complaints, with one user stating, 'Glad to see all the leads back, but no janitor guy? He was the best,' while another declared, 'No janitor, no scrubs.' Additional comments included, 'I love Scrubs but this ain't it without janitor,' and an angry query, 'Where. Is. The. Janitor?'
Theory Suggests Janitor May Return
Despite the widespread anger, some Scrubs enthusiasts have proposed a theory that could explain the Janitor's potential return. A social media user highlighted an image from the trailer showing a picture on a wall that appears to depict the Janitor alongside Dr. Kelso, suggesting he might be portrayed as a former hospital executive. Captioning the screenshot, they wrote, 'That's Kelso and the Janitor on the wall, right? They're not coming back, are you?' Supporting this idea, another fan added, 'He'll be in it if not season 1 they'll make sure for season 2.'
Creator and Cast Insights on Future Appearances
This theory gains credibility from recent statements by Zach Braff, who told Esquire that both the Janitor and Dr. Kelso could feature in the reboot if it is renewed for a second season. Braff explained, 'Well, the true answer is, if we're blessed to have a second season, absolutely. And the real answer for season one is we're not fully sure yet. Episodes eight and nine of the nine-episode order are still being written. They both are interested in doing it. But do we have the bandwidth in the first nine to get to it all and service a story that would be worthy of Ken and Neil? That might come true. At this point, I can't tell you the answer, but most definitely, if we are lucky enough to get a season two, that's something we want to do.'
Broader Context of TV Revivals
The Scrubs reboot arrives amidst a trend of television revivals, where creators aim to reimagine classic series for modern audiences. Similar to The Inbetweeners reboot, which explores characters navigating adulthood and parenthood, the new Scrubs series promises to offer touching narratives. With Bill Lawrence, known for hits like Ted Lasso and Shrinking, at the helm, there is optimism that the revival will honor the original while introducing fresh perspectives. Fans are encouraged to maintain an open mind, as the series has yet to air, and its potential to surprise remains high.
Scrubs is currently available for streaming on Disney+, allowing both longtime fans and new viewers to revisit the original series ahead of the reboot's premiere.
