Rolling Stones Source Disputes Melania Documentary Producer's Claims
A source close to Mick Jagger has publicly refuted assertions made by Marc Beckman, producer of the Melania Trump documentary, regarding the use of the Rolling Stones' iconic song 'Gimme Shelter' in the film. Beckman had previously told Variety that Jagger was personally involved and gave his blessing for the track's inclusion, describing the collaboration as non-political and focused on the artistic merit of the project.
Band Confirms No Liaison with Production Team
An official spokesperson for the Rolling Stones has confirmed to the Guardian that the band did not engage in any discussions with Beckman or his production team. The deal to license 'Gimme Shelter' was negotiated directly between the music rights holder, ABKCO, and the documentary's producers. This clarification comes amid a history of the Rolling Stones and other artists objecting to their music being used in political contexts associated with Donald Trump.
Wider Music Rights Controversies Surrounding the Film
The documentary, which chronicles Melania Trump's transition back to the White House ahead of Donald Trump's second inauguration in January 2025, has faced multiple music licensing hurdles. Beckman acknowledged that several artists, including Guns N' Roses, Grace Jones, and the estate of Prince, declined permission for their songs to be used, citing political objections. He expressed frustration, insisting the film is not political but a personal story about Melania Trump.
Additional Licensing Disputes and Film Performance
Further complications arose over the use of a Jonny Greenwood composition from the 'Phantom Thread' soundtrack, with Greenwood and director Paul Thomas Anderson requesting its removal due to insufficient notice. Despite this, the track remains in the film. Financially, Amazon acquired the rights for $40 million, with a $35 million marketing budget, but the documentary has grossed only $16.4 million worldwide, with a significant drop in box office performance after its opening weekend.
Producer Criticizes Film Critics and Audience Reception
Beckman also addressed the stark contrast between critic reviews and audience scores on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes, accusing critics of bias and prioritizing political ideology over cinematic evaluation. He emphasized that the film aims to present a non-political narrative, focusing solely on Melania Trump's personal journey.
