Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen Set to Receive BAFTA Fellowship at London Awards Ceremony
In a significant announcement ahead of the BAFTA Games Awards, Supercell CEO and co-founder Ilkka Paananen has been selected to receive the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship. This honour, which recognises individuals who have profoundly shaped the video game industry, will be presented at a ceremony scheduled for April 17 at the Southbank Centre in London.
A Legacy of Mobile Gaming Success
Ilkka Paananen co-founded Supercell in 2010, and under his leadership, the Finnish company has become a global powerhouse in mobile gaming. Supercell is best known for developing massively popular titles such as Clash Of Clans, Clash Royale, and Brawl Stars. In 2016, the company was acquired by Tencent in a deal valued at approximately €8.4 billion (£7.3 billion), cementing its influence in the industry.
Beyond his corporate achievements, Paananen has also made notable contributions through philanthropy. In 2015, he established the Ilkka Paananen Foundation, which focuses on enhancing social and mental well-being among children, young people, and families, partly through the development of educational games.
Joining an Elite Group of Industry Icons
The BAFTA Fellowship places Paananen among a distinguished list of previous recipients from the gaming world. This includes legendary figures such as Shigeru Miyamoto, Gabe Newell, Hideo Kojima, and Tim Schafer. In a statement, Paananen expressed his gratitude, saying, 'Receiving the BAFTA Fellowship is an incredible honour. Looking at the names of previous Fellows, I see so many of my personal heroes – people whose work has inspired me and who I continue to look up to.'
He further emphasised the role of his team, adding, 'Throughout my career, I have been extremely fortunate. But my greatest fortune, by far, has been the privilege of working with amazingly talented and passionate game developers over the past 25 years. They are the ones who create the magic. This award truly belongs to each and every one of them.'
Controversy and Criticism Surrounding the Selection
Despite Paananen's undeniable impact on the gaming industry, his selection has sparked some debate. Critics argue that games like Clash Of Clans, which heavily feature microtransactions, may not represent the artistic pinnacle of gaming. Some have questioned why other renowned creators, such as John Romero or Hidetaka Miyazaki, have not yet been honoured with the Fellowship.
However, BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip defended the choice, stating, 'It is a real privilege to honour Ilkka with the BAFTA Fellowship this year. A visionary leader in games, he has built a globally influential company while championing creative collaboration and trust at every level. His deep respect and commitment to nurturing emerging talent and his ongoing support for young people reflect the very best of BAFTA’s values.'

The upcoming ceremony will also spotlight other notable games, with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 leading the nominations with a total of 12 nods. Other contenders include Dispatch, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, Arc Raiders, and Blue Prince. The event promises to celebrate a diverse range of achievements across the gaming landscape, from indie projects to blockbuster titles.
As the gaming community anticipates the awards, Paananen's Fellowship serves as a reminder of the evolving nature of industry recognition, blending commercial success with broader contributions to creativity and social impact.
