Grammy-winning artist Charli XCX is preparing for a major cinematic takeover, beginning with the newly announced mockumentary The Moment, where she portrays a fictionalised version of herself.
Behind the Scenes of The Moment
The film, which released its first teaser on Thursday, is described by the singer as "the realest depiction of the music industry that I've ever seen" despite being a work of fiction. Based on her own concept, the project originated from the pressure she felt to create a traditional tour documentary.
Directed and co-written by her frequent collaborator Aidan Zamiri, The Moment explores an alternate reality where Charli made completely different choices during the promotional campaign for her massively successful album, Brat. The teaser cleverly blends authentic footage from her Sweat tour and press engagements with fabricated backstage scenes.
Star-Studded Cast and Future Projects
The mockumentary features an impressive ensemble cast including Kylie Jenner, Rachel Sennott, Alexander Skarsgård, and Kate Berlant. This forms just one part of Charli XCX's expanding acting portfolio, which has seen remarkable growth throughout 2024.
She has already appeared in three festival films this year:
- Friendship drama Erupcja
- Satirical comedy thriller Sacrifice (both premiered at Toronto International Film Festival)
- Queer fairytale 100 Nights of Hero (unveiled at Venice Film Festival)
The coming year promises even more high-profile appearances:
- Erotic drama I Want Your Sex alongside Olivia Wilde
- Art world thriller The Gallerist with Natalie Portman
- Horror remake Faces of Death featuring Barbie Ferreira
- Dakota Johnson's directorial debut A Tree in Blue
Musical Contributions and Creative Inspiration
Beyond acting, Charli continues her musical work with several upcoming projects. February will see the release of Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights adaptation, featuring new music from the artist. She's also composing for the Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel-starring drama Mother Mary, scheduled for release next year.
Reflecting on her expanding career in acting, Charli told Variety: "I am really enjoying my acting journey. I feel very, very inspired at the moment in that field, I feel unbelievably creative, and I only ever want to do things that inspire me and make me feel energised."
This creative explosion positions Charli XCX as one of the most versatile artists transitioning between music and film, with The Moment serving as the intriguing beginning of her 2026 big screen campaign.
