Beyond Trainspotting: The World of Irvine Welsh Documentary Review
Paul Sng's documentary Beyond Trainspotting: The World of Irvine Welsh offers a watchable yet somewhat uneven exploration of the iconic author's life and work. Released on digital platforms from 16 February, the film delves into Welsh's writing, the cinematic adaptations it spawned, and his formative years in Edinburgh. While the extended conversation footage with Welsh himself proves highly engaging, the documentary struggles with pacing and originality in its broader interview segments.
Engaging Core with Padding
The documentary's strongest element is undoubtedly the extensive footage featuring Irvine Welsh in candid discussion. He articulately reflects on his literary creations, the movies they inspired, and his youth in Edinburgh, providing valuable insights for fans and newcomers alike. His unique humor and sharp wit shine through, making these sections a genuine pleasure to watch.
However, the film is padded with redundant anecdotes from various interviewees, many of whom focus on tales of getting hilariously wasted in Welsh's company or general proximity. One particularly jarring 90s ladmag-style story involves a Marquis de Sade-themed photoshoot at Ibiza's Manumission club, which feels out of place and adds little substantive value.
Recycled Content and Missed Opportunities
Notable interviews include Iggy Pop, whose song Lust for Life featured in Trainspotting, and producer Andrew Macdonald. Yet footage with director Danny Boyle and the Trainspotting stars appears recycled from 2017 junket videos for the sequel T2 Trainspotting, based on Welsh's book Porno. This reliance on older material diminishes the documentary's freshness and depth.
The film misses opportunities to explore Welsh's broader influences and impact. More discussion on the cities he loves, other authors and music that inspire him, and how he has influenced contemporary writers would have enriched the narrative. Despite these shortcomings, hearing from this uniquely funny and articulate writer remains a highlight, offering glimpses into the mind behind the cultural phenomenon.
