Zoe Ball nervous as daughter Nelly heads to Reading Festival

Zoe Ball has admitted she will be watching from the sidelines this year as her 16-year-old daughter Nelly attends Reading Festival without her for the first time. The presenter, a mother of two, said she knows from personal experience how easy it is to get caught up in the excitement of festival season.

Parents' anxiety over festival safety

Research commissioned by Vodafone found that 65% of parents feel nervous about their children attending a festival, despite 92% trusting them to make sensible choices. Three-quarters of parents said they would spend the weekend eagerly waiting for updates from their children.

Ball, speaking at the 'Check-In & Chips' experience, said: "I've been going to festivals for years and absolutely love them, there's nothing quite like that feeling of heading off with your mates, seeing your favourite bands and having a brilliant weekend. Now Nelly's doing it, I'm experiencing festivals from the other side as a mum. You want them to go off, have the best time and enjoy that independence… but you also really, really want that little message home to know they're having an amazing time, and all is well."

Vodafone's festival initiatives

Festivalgoers at Reading can visit the first-ever Vodafone Check-in & Chips experience, where they can record a video message in a specially designed scribble booth and receive a free portion of chips in return. Ball praised the initiative, saying: "Having a great signal makes that so much easier, although actually getting your teenager to use it and check in is another matter. I love Vodafone's Check-in & Chips because, frankly, if a message home comes with free chips, everyone's a winner. They get fed, we get our update. Perfect."

Reading Festival, one of the biggest events of the summer, will see more than 100,000 people camp on the site from today. Vodafone is also offering power bank stations where music fans can buy fully charged power banks, exchangeable for a new one each day. Vodafone and Three customers get access to the Vodafone Viewing Platform, featuring free ice cream, complimentary phone charging, and views of The Grid. At Leeds Festival, attendees can use the Connect & Charge area to power up devices and access free Wi-Fi between sets.

Connectivity as part of festival experience

Rob Winterschladen, Consumer Director at VodafoneThree, said: "Connectivity is now a huge part of the festival experience - whether you're sharing unforgettable moments, checking in with loved ones or finding friends in the crowd."

Ball's comments reflect a broader trend, as parents increasingly rely on technology to stay connected with teenagers attending large events. The initiatives at Reading and Leeds aim to address this need, offering practical solutions for both festivalgoers and their families.
