V&A East Museum Opens: First Look at London's New Cultural Hub

V&A East Museum Launches in Stratford: A Spectacular New Cultural Destination

After a decade of development, the V&A East Museum has finally opened its doors on Carpenter's Road in Stratford, completing east London's vibrant creative quarter alongside the BBC, Sadler's Wells East, and UAL. This new museum, situated on a former brownfield site, represents the final major opening for the V&A group in London, following recent additions like the V&A East Storehouse, the David Bowie Centre, and the renovated Young V&A, solidifying the institution's status as a cultural powerhouse in the capital.

The museum officially welcomed the public on Saturday, April 18, 2026, with Time Out securing an exclusive preview. V&A East distinguishes itself from its counterparts, such as the V&A East Storehouse and the traditional V&A in South Kensington, by positioning as a more accessible and contemporary sibling. Designed to appeal to a broad audience, it moves away from the sometimes-stuffy reputation of older galleries, offering a fresh, engaging experience.

Inside the 'Why We Make' Gallery and Exhibitions

The permanent gallery, titled 'Why We Make,' explores creativity across two floors, showcasing over 500 objects from the V&A's collection in areas like art, architecture, design, performance, and fashion. Thematically organized, it addresses topics such as identity, wellbeing, social justice, and environmental action, with a strong emphasis on London-based pieces, including an 1830s sketch of Victoria Park's original design.

Zofia Trafas White, senior curator at V&A East, explains, 'V&A East Museum's "Why We Make" galleries offer a new way to experience the V&A's collection. Topical and resonant, they examine objects through a contemporary lens and explore themes that matter most to our audiences.' The top floor hosts rotating exhibitions, starting with 'The Music Is Black: A British Story.'

Architectural Design and Interior Experience

Designed by architects O'Donnell + Tuomey, who also created Sadler's Wells East nearby, the building features a modern, bright, and airy interior with white walls, tall glass windows, high ceilings, and wide spiraling staircases. Its unique geometric shape was inspired by an x-ray of a Balenciaga dress displayed at the V&A South Kensington in 2017, providing a calm, blank canvas for exhibitions.

The spacious permanent collections display items from floor to ceiling, incorporating interactive and sensory elements, such as touchable tile recreations and large video displays. Bold, colorful articles catch the eye, enhancing the visitor experience. The lower ground floor houses a café run by Jikoni, offering coffee from Workshop, Goan aubergine and cheddar toasties, mushroom congee, and sweet treats, while the top floor terrace provides panoramic views over the East End.

Highlights and Community Focus

V&A East features a diverse array of objects, from centuries-old Japanese screens and Indian textiles to a strong focus on local community makers. London-based artists and craft makers take center stage, including Alexander McQueen, Yinka Ilori, and choreographer Akram Khan. Notable displays include a Walthamstow FC football shirt with the William Morris 'Yare' print and flamboyant costumes from a 1987 Michael Clark and Leigh Bowery performance at Sadler's Wells.

Fashion enthusiasts will delight in highlights like the striking Molly Goddard 'Daria' dress in hot pink, delicate Alexander McQueen dresses, punk-inspired Vivienne Westwood ensembles, and 18th-century silk gowns from Spitalfields. Upstairs, exhibitions address climate activism with items from Extinction Rebellion and Greenpeace, revolutionary artworks like an Egyptian textile by Hany 'Abd al-Kader responding to the 2011 uprising, and posters from community print collectives such as the Tower Hamlets Federation of Tenants and the See Red Women's Workshop.

Co-designed with young people, creatives, and locals, V&A East aims to resonate with east Londoners, blending past and future in a thoroughly modern museum. As it opens to the public, this new cultural hub promises to engage and inspire, offering a dynamic addition to London's museum scene.
