Parents Assist Children in Bypassing Roblox Age Verification Systems

Roblox, the popular gaming platform, has disclosed that parents are actively helping their children circumvent age checks designed to segregate users by age groups. This revelation has led the company to implement daily rechecks on accounts where user behavior suggests the individual might be younger than their facial age estimation indicates.

Facial Age Assurance and Parental Interference

In December of last year, Roblox introduced new safety features requiring users to pass facial age assurance to access chat functions, grouping them with peers of similar ages until they turn 21. However, Matt Kaufman, Roblox's chief of safety, reported that during validation tests, instances were observed where children handed phones to their parents to complete the checks. "When we went and did the validation tests on that, you could see the kid in the background who handed the phone to their parent," Kaufman stated, emphasizing the necessity of robust systems to prevent such manipulation.

Fraud Detection and Ongoing Monitoring

Kaufman highlighted that the facial age estimation technology is not flawless, with an error rate of approximately 1.4 years for users under 18. To combat fraud, Roblox employs extensive checks to ensure users are not using videos of others or altering their appearance with items like magic markers to appear older. "We want to make sure that people aren't simply holding up a video of somebody else, or using a magic marker to put a moustache on their face and claim that they're much older," he explained. Age verification is not a one-time process; if user behavior deviates from the estimated age, the platform prompts rechecks, which occur daily for some accounts.

Global Adoption and Regulatory Context

As of April, 50% of Roblox's global daily user base of 144 million has undergone age assurance checks, with rates reaching 60% in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, where the system launched in December. Despite these measures, Roblox remains exempt from Australia's under-16 social media ban due to its safety enhancements. However, eSafety commissioner Julie Inman Grant noted that teens within two years of 16 can easily bypass facial age estimation on various platforms, with over two-thirds of Australian teens under 16 still accessing banned sites as of March.

Enhanced Safety Measures and Future Plans

Following a Guardian Australia investigation that exposed virtual sexual harassment on the platform, Roblox has announced additional checks for games, including moderation of player interactions to ensure age-appropriateness. The company is also introducing new account types for users under nine and those aged nine to 15, featuring age-specific games. Later this year, Roblox plans to adopt the Australian classification system for games, further strengthening its commitment to online safety.
