OpenAI Acquires Tech Talkshow TBPN to Shape AI Narrative
OpenAI Buys Tech Talkshow TBPN in Media Push

In a strategic move to influence public discourse on artificial intelligence, OpenAI has acquired the popular technology-focused talkshow TBPN. The announcement was made by the show's co-hosts on Wednesday, marking OpenAI's entry into the media business.

OpenAI's Strategic Media Acquisition

OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, is purchasing TBPN, a daily talkshow broadcast live from Los Angeles. Co-hosts John Coogan and Jordi Hays produce three-hour episodes each weekday, featuring interviews with technology founders, venture capitalists, and industry leaders. The financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed publicly.

Fostering Constructive AI Conversations

Fidji Simo, OpenAI's chief of strategy, emphasized the importance of this acquisition in an internal message to staff. She stated that as OpenAI drives significant technological shifts, including the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI), the company has a responsibility to facilitate genuine public dialogue about AI's impact.

"We're driving a really big technological shift. And with the mission of bringing AGI to the world comes a responsibility to help create a space for a real, constructive conversation about the changes AI creates," Simo wrote.

Editorial Independence Preserved

Simo assured that TBPN will maintain full editorial independence under OpenAI's ownership. The show will continue to select its own guests, determine its programming, and make independent editorial decisions. This autonomy is considered foundational to the show's credibility and is explicitly protected in the acquisition agreement.

TBPN's Broadcasting and Traditions

TBPN broadcasts live on multiple platforms including X, YouTube, and Spotify. The show is known for its distinctive tradition where hosts bang a gong when guests announce their latest fundraising achievements. Coogan confirmed that TBPN will continue its daily broadcasts at the regular time despite the ownership change.

Historical Connections to OpenAI

John Coogan revealed deep historical ties to OpenAI's leadership in a post on X. He described the acquisition as a "full circle moment," noting that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman funded his first company in 2013. Their professional relationship continued through Y Combinator, where Altman served as president, and later at Founders Fund where Coogan encountered OpenAI's post-ChatGPT funding round in late 2022.

"This is not an April fools joke," Coogan emphasized at the beginning of Thursday's show, officially confirming the acquisition to viewers.

Context of OpenAI's Growth

This media acquisition comes amid OpenAI's rapid expansion and substantial funding rounds. The company recently closed a $122 billion funding round during the ongoing artificial intelligence boom, positioning itself at the forefront of AI development and deployment.

The TBPN acquisition represents OpenAI's latest effort to shape public understanding and discourse around artificial intelligence as the technology continues to evolve and transform various sectors of society.
