EA Sports FC 27 is reportedly set to reintroduce a face-scanning feature that was last seen in FIFA 16, according to a prominent leaker. The feature, called PhotoFit, would allow players to scan their face into the game to create a customised avatar.
PhotoFit leak details
The claim comes from renowned leaker FutSheriff, who posted on X (formerly Twitter) that PhotoFit will be included in the upcoming football simulation. The post stated: "BREAKING: PhotoFit is coming in FC 27 • ✅ Scan your face and get it recreated in game." The leak suggests that players will be able to use their smartphone cameras to capture their likeness and integrate it into the game.
While EA has not officially confirmed this feature, it would mark a return to a technology the series previously employed. From FIFA 12 in 2011 through FIFA 16, players could use a feature called Game Face, which allowed them to upload photos to create their own player. However, the feature was removed after FIFA 16, likely due to technical limitations at the time.
Potential integration and modern improvements
It is unclear which game modes PhotoFit will be available in, but it is likely to be connected to Player Career Mode, where players create their own custom player. Given the significant advancements in smartphone camera technology over the past decade, the feature could be more accurate and user-friendly than its predecessor.
Face-scanning technology has been experimented with in other games, including Rainbow Six Vegas, WWE 2K, and the PlayStation EyeToy. More recently, Amazon's Throne And Liberty also incorporated similar mechanics. Interestingly, the concept dates back to 2000's Perfect Dark, which had a face-scanning feature using the Game Boy Camera, but it was cut at Nintendo's request due to concerns about its use in multiplayer matches.
Release date and editions
EA Sports FC 27 is scheduled to launch on September 25, 2026, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The standard edition will feature Kylian Mbappé on the cover, while the Ultimate Edition will showcase both Mbappé and Jude Bellingham.
The inclusion of PhotoFit could set a precedent for other EA titles, such as the Battlefield series, to adopt similar technology. As the gaming industry continues to explore immersive customisation options, this feature may become a trend.
