Crimson Desert PS5 Patches Roll Out Amid Player Complaints
Developer Pearl Abyss has swiftly released several patches for Crimson Desert on the PlayStation 5, addressing widespread player complaints about crashes and blurry graphics. The open-world action adventure, which launched officially on Thursday night, has faced disappointing reviews despite significant pre-release buzz. This marks Pearl Abyss's first console game, following their success with Black Desert Online.
Technical Issues and Player Workarounds
Prior to launch, reviewers only had access to the PC version, and footage was primarily shown from the PS5 Pro, raising suspicions about the base PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions. Since release, players have reported frequent crashes, particularly when navigating the map, as highlighted in videos shared on social media. For instance, one user documented the game freezing with an error message popping up.
Additionally, many players have encountered blurry visuals in performance mode. Some believe this is linked to the PlayStation 5's 120Hz mode, with fixes involving disabling the 'enable 120Hz Output' toggle in the console's settings. Pearl Abyss's PR and marketing director has endorsed this change, though experts like John Linneman from Digital Foundry note it may only affect displays that improperly support 4K resolution at 120Hz.
Patch Updates and Improvements
Pearl Abyss has already rolled out multiple patches to address these issues. Patch 1.00.01, released shortly after launch, fixed bugs in the user interface, corrected localization errors, and improved usability for certain systems. A second patch, launched on March 20, targeted more specific problems, such as eliminating the need to replay a puzzle section in Chapter 4 after dying and allowing faster fast-forwarding of cut scenes.
While these updates have been prioritized for the PlayStation 5 version, Pearl Abyss has stated that patches for Xbox Series X/S, Epic Games Store, and the Mac App Store will follow at a later time. This has led some gamers to consider waiting a few weeks until these technical kinks are fully resolved before purchasing.
Community Response and Future Outlook
The situation has drawn comparisons to past gaming launches, but it is not seen as severe as incidents like Cyberpunk 2077. Players continue to share tips and workarounds online, contributing to a collaborative effort to improve the gaming experience. As Pearl Abyss works on further updates, the community remains hopeful for smoother gameplay in the coming weeks.
