Brits Reveal Dream High Street: Bakery, Free Parking, Indie Coffee

High streets across the UK are struggling, but a new survey reveals what Brits truly want to see in their local shopping areas. From free parking to traditional shops like bakeries and butchers, the research paints a clear picture of public preference.

Top Desires for the Perfect High Street

According to a poll of over 2,000 people, 70% want a bakery, 69% desire free parking, and 59% prefer an independent coffee shop over chain stores. The findings highlight a longing for quality service and community feel, as expressed by Paul Grout, owner of MEAT N16 butchers in Stoke Newington: 'It's about being able to get a quality service that you just don't get in big corporations. You get the professional knowledge and get to know your customers.'

Essential Chains Still Valued

Despite the preference for independents, some chains remain popular. 41% of respondents still want a Greggs, 40% desire an M&S, and 39% want a Boots on their high street. This comes as iconic stores like Wilko, WH Smith, and Topshop have closed, and the shopping centre in Ashford, Kent, has been demolished due to financial unsustainability.

Unwanted Establishments

The survey also identified the most unwanted businesses. Vape shops topped the list at 68%, followed by empty shop units (66%), gambling arcades (52%), bookies (45%), and payday loan shops (41%). Tanning salons, phone repair shops, fast food takeaways, charity shops, and chain coffee shops were also disliked. In Earl's Court, west London, three betting shops exist within a minute of each other, contributing to high crime rates.

Community Sentiment

Charlotte Broadbent, UK General Manager at Faire, noted: 'For most people, their local high street is still the heart of their community, and what surprised us most is just how strong that demand remains. Over the last 20 years, retailers have faced constant challenges, but shoppers are still choosing to support their high street, particularly independent businesses.'
