Ruben Amorim is keen to bring Noussair Mazraoui to AC Milan, adding the Manchester United defender to his list of former club targets that includes Manuel Ugarte, Mason Mount and Amad Diallo. Amorim, who replaced Massimiliano Allegri at Milan last month, previously managed Mazraoui at Old Trafford and praised him as the 'future of our team'.
Amorim's admiration for Mazraoui
Shortly after his appointment at Manchester United in 2024, Amorim lauded Mazraoui, who had joined from Bayern Munich for £17m. 'He's a top player. He understands the game. He knows how to attack, he's very technical, he's very good defensively and he's very good one-on-one. He's a modern player. I think he's the future of our team,' Amorim said. Mazraoui has made 77 appearances for United and featured at the World Cup for quarter-finalists Morocco.
Transfer speculation and current status
Italian transfer expert Matteo Moretto confirmed Mazraoui is one of Amorim's 'favourites' but noted no club-to-club negotiations have begun. 'As of now there are no negotiations underway, there's no direct contact between the clubs. But what I can tell you is that certainly Mazraoui, who is 28-years-old and also has a contract expiring in 2028 with an option, is a player highly regarded by Amorim,' Moretto said on Fabrizio Romano's YouTube channel. AC Milan have also been linked with Ugarte, Mount and Amad, but United will not entertain offers for Mount or Amad this summer. Ugarte, who suffered a serious injury at the World Cup, is staying put.
Amorim's reflection on Manchester United tenure
At his AC Milan unveiling, Amorim admitted he made 'mistakes' during his 14-month spell at Manchester United, which ended with his sacking in January. 'The first thing is it's hard to explain the mistakes because for that I would have to explain the context of the last adventure. I learned a lot and I made some mistakes. I didn't have the opportunity to say something to the Manchester United fans at the moment and I'm really proud to be their coach for a year in that time,' he said. AC Milan finished fifth in Serie A last season, while United climbed to third under new permanent boss Michael Carrick.
