Shoppers with a peanut allergy have been issued an urgent warning not to eat a specific festive chocolate product sold by supermarket chain Aldi. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a product recall notice for 90g packs of Dairyfine Salted Caramel Filled Gonks, citing a 'possible health risk'.
Details of the Aldi Chocolate Recall
The affected product, which features chocolate gnomes in a blue and white packet, does not mention peanuts on its packaging. This omission means it poses a significant danger to anyone with an allergy. All packages of this size are affected, regardless of their use-by date. The recall was first issued on November 28, 2025, and was reissued on December 2 with amendments, including the removal of an incorrect batch code.
Aldi has acted swiftly, stating: ‘As a precautionary measure, our supplier is recalling Dairyfine Salted Caramel Filled Gonks because it may contain peanuts.’ The discount retailer has apologised for the product not meeting its usual standards and is asking customers to return it to their nearest store for a full refund. Warning signs are being displayed in stores to alert the public.
The Serious Risk of Peanut Allergies
This recall underscores the potentially fatal consequences of peanut allergies. For some individuals, the reaction is so severe that even trace exposure can be life-threatening. The company has also been advised to contact allergy support organisations to help disseminate the warning to vulnerable members.
The incident follows a recent case where a woman with a severe nut allergy, Josie North, had a frightening experience on a Virgin Atlantic flight. She was forced to plead with cabin crew not to serve pecan pie during a 10-hour journey from Los Angeles to London.
A Shift in Allergy Guidance
Interestingly, recent years have seen a decrease in peanut allergy prevalence due to updated medical advice. A pivotal 2023 study in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology identified a ‘clear window of opportunity’ for introducing peanuts to infants. The research found that exposing babies to peanut products, in safe forms, between four and six months of age could slash the risk of developing an allergy by up to 77%.
For now, the immediate advice from Aldi and the FSA remains clear: anyone who has purchased the 90g Dairyfine Salted Caramel Filled Gonks should not consume them and should return the product immediately for a full refund.
