In a major leadership change, the London-listed insurance and financial services powerhouse Prudential has announced the appointment of banking veteran Douglas Flint as its new chairman.
A Banking Heavyweight Takes the Helm
The company confirmed on Tuesday that Flint will take over from the retiring Shriti Vadera, who has held the position since January 2021. Flint is best known for his long tenure at HSBC, where he served as group finance director from 1995 to 2010 before ascending to the role of chairman from 2010 to 2017.
Since leaving HSBC, Flint has chaired both IP Group and Abderdeen, the asset manager which he oversaw as it reinstated the vowels in its name. Jeremy Anderson, Prudential's senior independent director who led the search, praised Flint's credentials. "He brings extensive experience leading global financial institutions, alongside deep experience in Asia, and is ideally positioned to lead the next stage of the Group's development," Anderson stated.
Strong Financial Performance and Shareholder Returns
The leadership transition comes as Prudential reports robust financial health. The group recorded a $1.6 billion pre-tax operating profit for the first half of 2025, marking a six per cent increase compared to the same period the previous year.
Reflecting this strength, the company raised its interim dividend by 13 per cent to 7.71 cents per share. Prudential's board has forecast that the dividend will grow by more than ten per cent over the 2025-2027 period, signalling a clear commitment to returning cash to its shareholders.
Strategic Focus on Asian Growth
Both outgoing and incoming leadership highlighted Flint's specific expertise as a key asset for Prudential's future strategy, which is heavily focused on the Asian market. Chief Executive Anil Wadhwani said, "Douglas brings extremely valuable expertise to the board and his deep knowledge of Asia is particularly important for the company."
Shriti Vadera, who will be stepping down, expressed her delight at the appointment. "His deep understanding of global finance, and extensive knowledge of Prudential's markets will be invaluable," she remarked. Vadera, who served in Gordon Brown's government and made history as the first woman to chair a major UK bank at Santander UK, is credited with establishing strong foundations during her tenure.
Douglas Flint's appointment is effective immediately, positioning him to guide Prudential through its next phase of strategic growth and capitalising on opportunities in its core markets.
