PIMCO Europe's profit dropped 11% to £212 million in 2023, even as performance fees surged 25%, according to the firm's latest financial filings. The decline was driven by higher staff costs and increased regulatory expenses, which offset strong revenue growth from performance-based compensation.
Performance Fees Rise, But Costs Bite
The asset manager, a subsidiary of US-based Pacific Investment Management Company, reported that performance fees jumped to £1.2 billion in 2023, up from £960 million the previous year. However, total operating expenses rose by 12% to £1.8 billion, with staff costs accounting for the largest share.
According to the company's annual report, revenue from management fees remained flat at £2.1 billion, while total revenue increased by 8% to £3.3 billion. The profit margin narrowed to 6.4% from 7.9% in 2022.
Staff Costs and Regulatory Pressure
Staff costs increased by 14% to £1.4 billion, reflecting higher bonus pools tied to performance and increased headcount across its European operations. The firm also cited higher costs related to regulatory compliance, including the UK's Senior Managers and Certification Regime and European Union regulations.
PIMCO Europe, which manages assets for pension funds, insurance companies, and sovereign wealth funds, said it continues to invest in technology and risk management systems. The company's total assets under management in Europe stood at £740 billion at the end of 2023, up from £720 billion a year earlier.
Impact and Outlook
The profit decline comes amid a challenging environment for asset managers, with volatile markets and rising costs pressuring margins. PIMCO Europe's parent company, PIMCO, reported a 5% increase in global assets under management to $1.8 trillion.
Despite the profit drop, the firm remains one of the largest fixed-income managers in Europe, with a strong presence in London, Munich, and Amsterdam. The company said it expects continued investment in its European platform, focusing on expanding its private credit and alternative investment capabilities.
