UK Passport Office's Urgent 5-Week Christmas Travel Warning
Passport Office's urgent 5-week Christmas travel alert

The HM Passport Office has issued a critical five-week alert to British citizens intending to travel abroad during the upcoming Christmas season. With the festive period rapidly approaching, officials are urging travellers to verify their passport's validity immediately to avoid any potential disruption to their holiday plans.

Check Your Passport Validity Now

All UK citizens must possess a valid passport for international travel. If your passport is lost, stolen, damaged, or has expired, you will need to apply for a replacement. The standard cost for this is £94.50 for an online application or £107 if using a paper form.

While the standard processing time for a new passport is typically around three weeks, the Passport Office has emphasised that this is not guaranteed. In a recent post on X, formerly known as Twitter, they delivered a timely reminder with a festive twist: "Christmas is just 5 weeks away! If 'Yule' be travelling, check your passport is valid for travel today. Don't let your sleigh be delayed."

Potential for Delays and Important Guidance

Accompanying guidance on the official Gov.uk website clarifies that processing can take longer than the standard three weeks. This can occur if officials require more information or need to conduct an interview with the applicant. The office commits to informing applicants of such a need within the initial three-week period.

A crucial warning from officials states: "Do not book travel until you have a valid passport." This is particularly important as a newly issued passport will not have the same number as the previous one, which could invalidate any travel bookings made in advance.

Urgent Passport Services for Faster Turnaround

For those who discover an issue with their passport close to their travel date, two fast-track services are available. The fastest option is the one-day Premium Service, priced at £222 for a standard adult passport and £235 for a 54-page frequent traveller version. It is exclusively for adult renewals. Appointments become available two days after application, and the new passport can be collected from the passport office just four hours after the appointment, where the old document must be surrendered.

Alternatively, the one-week Fast Track service allows applicants to secure an appointment as early as the next day. The new passport is then delivered by courier one week after the appointment. The costs for this service are:

  • £178 for an adult passport (£191 for frequent traveller)
  • £145 for a child's passport (£158 for frequent traveller)

For extreme emergencies, such as the need to travel due to a medical emergency, serious illness, a death in the family, or urgent government business, the Passport Office advises contacting the Passport Advice line directly for assistance.
