A historic lido that has been compared to pools in Greece and the Mediterranean will reopen for the summer season on Saturday, May 23, 2026. The Strand Lido in Gillingham, Kent, is just over an hour from London and offers a unique swimming experience.
Only Riverside Saltwater Pool in the UK
The Strand Lido holds the distinction of being the only riverside saltwater pool in the entire United Kingdom. Its water is drawn from the River Medway, then filtered and chlorinated to ensure safety. The pool has been a beloved destination for local families since it first opened in 1896, and now attracts tourists from across the region.
Mediterranean-Style Design
The lido features strikingly blue waters, a splashpad, and a 300-metre lazy river. The design, with bright white painted concrete edged in royal blue, gives the water a hue reminiscent of Greece or the Mediterranean. According to The Lido Guide, the interior is a "riot of Mediterranean-resort-style colour and fun" that will excite children and adults alike.
The complex includes six 25-metre lanes for serious swimmers, a paddling pool for young children, and water fountains. As the pool is unheated, it operates seasonally. After the May 23 opening, it will be open weekends until the school summer holidays, then daily until September.
Additional Amenities
Beyond swimming, the Strand Leisure Park offers sunbathing areas, a café, picnic spots in shaded park areas, and play areas. Changing rooms, poolside showers, and a shop selling inflatables are available. Visitors may bring their own rubber rings. The park also features a miniature railway that operates on sunny days and riverside walks.
One glowing review from a visitor who traveled from Suffolk said: "Lovely day out. Pool has a lazy river, kids pool and adult pool, changing rooms, toilets, café. Lots of space to set up camp for the afternoon." Another remarked: "Very good few hours. Looks like we are on holiday. Lazy river all around the outside (take a rubber ring)."
Tickets can be booked online through the Medway Council website to secure a spot at this much-loved pool.
